'The Companie of Canterbury'
15th Century Re-enactment group.
The Companie of Canterbury are a Kent based group, depicting the troops raised by the city of Canterbury, England, during the period known as the Wars of the Roses (1450 - 1487). During this period the county of Kent, and Canterbury in particular, played a significant but little known role in this bitter civil war. Ever ready to jump on the bandwagon of rebellion, the men (and women) of Kent, were only too willing to offer their services to to the warring houses of both York and Lancaster. Whilst coming out in open support for the Duke of York and Earl of Warick at the outset of hostilities, they were later to 'turn their coats' in rebellion against Edward IV and again against Richard III, albeit unsuccessfully in both instances. They did, however, have notable success at the battle of Northampton, under the command of the Earl of Warwick, where it was documented that "the Kentish men won the field for Warwick"
The current 'Companie of Canterbury' were formed in 1999, and are a mixed family orientated 'social' group, which as a member household of the 'Wars of the Roses Federation (www.wotrf.org) , attend and take part in various medieval battle re-enactments, medieval festivals and events throughout England between April and September. Potential new members are always welcome and every effort is made to make becoming a member as easy and cost effective as possible.
